Green spaces ‘improve health’

There is more evidence that living near a ‘green space’ has health benefits.

Research in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health says the impact is particularly noticeable in reducing rates of mental ill health.

The annual rates of 15 out of 24 major physical diseases were also significantly lower among those living closer to green spaces.

One environmental expert said the study confirmed that green spaces create ‘oases’ of improved health around them.

The researchers from the VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam looked at the health records of 350,000 people registered with 195 family doctors across the Netherlands.

Only people who had been registered with their GP for longer than 12 months were included because the study assumed this was the minimum amount of time people would have to live in an environment before any effect of it would be noticeable. Read more…

Archives of Neurology reports how a 22-year-old man who died in hospital following multiple brain abscesses weeks after getting his tongue pierced.

The man’s Israeli doctors warn infection can spread in the bloodstream from the piercing up to the brain.

Piercing can more commonly lead to chipped teeth and oral infections, and sometimes heart problems, say experts.

Despite the risks, tongue piercings remain popular.

Celebrities like Spice Girl Mel B and Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Phillips have had their tongues pierced.

But experts say people should think twice and put their health before fashion.

Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association, said: “Dentists are all too aware of the health problems that can be caused by oral piercings. Read more…

For the past several years, Economy class syndrome has been all over the newspaper and TV headlines. In the economy class section of the aircraft, it is just something that happens to folks who are immobile for long times.

Economy Class Syndrome is a misnomer as it also occurs in first class and among flight attendants and even pilots also.DVT means deep vein thrombosis, where the blood pools in the deep veins of the legs and then clots. Sometimes these clots can break off and rush to the lungs or heart, causing problems like a pulmonary embolism or myocardial infarction, which are also known as a heart attacks.

When blood coagulates and slows down, particularly in the lower legs, after long periods of immobility when traveling which occurs after longer periods of 4 hours or more. About 3-5% of air travelers develop these clots. Usually painless, but they can cause pain and swelling.

Besides immobility, factors that cause DVT include dehydration, low humidity and low cabin pressure. While it is most common on planes it can occur during any type of travel.

Most common risk factors for Economy Class Syndrome are clotting factor abnormalities which are inherited, smoking (nicotine promotes blood clots), illness with cancer, dehydration and prolonged immobility.

(1) Get up and move about if practical. Besides, avoid sitting at window seating as window seat riders are a lot more expected to acquire DVT.

(2) Keep hydrated and avoid alcoholic beverage and caffeine uptake when journeying.

(4) Stretching and motion your feet and legs even while seating.
