Binge drinking does not occur just among teenagers or college students. A recent study indicated that drinking large amounts of alcohol is now more prevalent among middle-aged adults than previously thought.

Twenty-three percent of men and 9 percent of women between 50 and 64 years old reported drinking at least five alcoholic beverages in the same day, in the previous month, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

“This is not a teenage problem. This is not a college-level problem. This is a problem that is existing in today’s boomer population,” said Carol Colleran, author of “Aging and Addiction: Helping Older Adults Overcome Alcohol and Medication Dependence.”

The study defines binge drinking as someone having five or more drinks during the same occasion within the past 30 days.Read more…

Peptic ulcer Definition:-

Peptic ulcer is the medical term used to describe both Gastric Ulcer and Duodenal Ulcer. Ulcer is a sore, a lesion that is open and is fond either on the skin or the parts of the body covered by mucous. A proper lifestyle may reduce the symptoms of a peptic ulcer.

There are three types of Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD):-

(1) Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)

(2) Stress-related mucosal damage (Stress ulcers)

(3) Helicobacter pylori (HP)-associated ulcers

Peptic Ulcer Symptoms Signs:-

The most typical symptom is that of a gnawing persistent pain in the abdomen especially when the stomach is empty. Most people face a burning pain in the abdomen which also wakes them up in the nights at times.

Loss of appetite (although in the case of duodenal ulcers, it sometimes increases appetite), Belching, Weight loss, a bloated feeling, nausea, Vomiting (which is sometimes even blood), Water brash and melena (unusual and bad smelling feces).

Peptic Ulcer Treatment Care Cures:-

Most people will be prescribed medicines that reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. Quitting smoking and alcohol can better your chances of recovery from peptic ulcer. Use of medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen for a long term may lead to peptic ulcer.

Peptic Ulcer Prevention Risk Factors:-

You may never get rid of your Peptic ulcer, but at least you can have a semi-normal life and get out and live some. If you take your medications and go in for regular checkups, then hopefully your ulcer will heal.

Sleep
Many people find restful sleep difficult

BBC News
Trouble sleeping is common – more than a fifth of adults will complain of sleep problems at some period in their lives.

A quarter of the UK population experience a form of sleep disorder that results in excessive daytime sleepiness.

Insomnia

Insomnia is the feeling of not getting enough sleep. This can be related to not being able to get off to sleep easily, waking too early or broken, unrefreshing sleep.

There may be a number of factors that contribute to a person’s insomnia.

Stress, anxiety and other emotions may play a part, as may environmental factors such as noise or an uncomfortable bed.

Jet lag, shift work, excess alcohol or too much caffeine can lead to poor sleep patterns.

Physical causes include tinnitus (ringing in the ears), asthma and indigestion, as well as some of the other sleep disorders described in more detail below.

If a cause can be found then the problem may be easy to remedy – buying a new, comfortable bed for example.Read more…

BBC News

One in five young teenagers suffer headaches at least once a week, say researchers.

Children and teenagers may not seek help for headaches

Of 1,000 12-15 year olds in Exeter questioned for the study, 10% had more than two headaches a week.

That group had a poorer quality of life than children with asthma, diabetes or cancer, the British Journal of General Practice reported.

The researchers said many children were suffering unnecessarily with headaches at home and at school.

Study leader Dr David Kernick said headache was the most common type of pain in children but estimates on the prevalence of headache in teenagers and children vary widely.

Also there is little known about the impact of headache in children, he said.

The study participants – half boys and half girls – completed a questionnaire to find out not only how often they had headaches but also what effect that had on their quality of life.Read more…

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS, PCOD)?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS, PCOD) Definition:-

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common cause of infertility in women. Women can develop PCOS if there are too many male hormones in their bodies and not enough female hormones.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is now recognized as a heterogeneous syndrome. Women with PCOS frequently have a mother or sister with PCOS. But there is not yet enough evidence to say there is a genetic link to this disorder.

It is a medical condition characterized by high levels of androgen hormones, missed or irregular periods, and multiple cysts on the ovaries.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS, PCOD) Symptoms:-

PCOS/PCOD symptoms may include male pattern baldness, oily skin or dandruff, high blood pressure, High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and cholesterol, infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and sleep apnea. Many women also experience bouts of depression related to their appearance or inability to conceive.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS, PCOD) Causes:-

PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility.

The common causes and risk factors of polycystic ovary syndrome include the following:

An imbalance in the hormones (chemical messengers) in your brain and your ovaries,Excess fat,Family history of Polycystic ovary syndrome,Genetics may be a factor.

Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS, PCOD) Treatment:-

Weight reduction is associated with normalization of hormonal disturbances and the resumption of regular ovulation. It also has a beneficial impact on the consequences of PCOS (eg, cardiovascular diseases, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia).
For women who don’t want to become pregnant, birth control pills can regulate menstrual cycles, reduce male hormone levels, and help to clear acne.

Cosmetic treatment of facial hirsutism with electroepilation and laser hair removal has also been studied and found to be beneficial.

Reproductive Medicine.

Hormone treatment to suppress ovarian activity is a reasonable choice if the patient does not want to conceive now, and is having problems with excessive hair growth.

Metformin can be taken with fertility medications and helps to make PCOS women ovulate on lower doses of medication.

If medications don’t help you become pregnant, your doctor may recommend an outpatient surgery called laparoscopic ovarian drilling.Polycystic Ovary Syndrome PCOD PCOS female infertility Treament Symptoms Causes Risk Factors Signs Facts Definition Health Facts Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS, PCOD) Symptoms,Treatment, Causes,Risk Factors
