Is the End of Men Imminent?

By RADHA CHITALE

What makes a man a man? Socially, that is a complicated question. Genetically, however, it is as simple as a single Y chromosome.

But guys, that chromosome is in trouble.

In a new study, researchers say there is a dramatic loss of genes from the human Y chromosome that eventually could lead to its complete disappearance — in the next few millennia. While the Y chromosome’s degeneration has been known to geneticists and evolutionary biologists for decades, the study sheds new light on some of the evolutionary processes that may have contributed to its demise and posits that, as the degeneration continues, the Y chromosome could disappear from our genetic repertoire entirely.

“It’s certainly possible, but it’s difficult to predict when it will happen,” said Kateryna Makova, an associate professor of biology at Penn State University, who led the study, which was published Thursday in the journal PLoS Genetics.

Although geneticists and evolutionary biologists agree that the Y chromosome is degenerating — and far more rapidly than its X counterpart — they reject the idea of a world far in the future where men are obsolete. Read more…

Chicken pox in adults is very rare, but only the ones that have not head chicken pox when they were children.

Chickenpox occurs mostly during the end of the winter and the beginning of the spring. It generally affects children aged from 2 to 8 and can take the form of epidemics.

Chicken Pox Symptoms:-

It starts with moderate fever and then characteristic spots appearing in two or three waves, mainly on the body and head rather than the hands and becoming itchy raw pox (pocks), small open sores which heal mostly without scarring.

This infectious disease has a two-week incubation period and is highly contagious by air transmission two days before symptoms appear.

Chicken Pox Treatment/Prevention:-

Rub the Vitamin E oil into the skin and watch for a healing effect.

Herbal tea prepared by any of the following herbs has shown to be effective in treating chicken pox: basil, chamomile, lemon balm, and marigold. Add lemon, honey, or cinnamon into the tea.

The use of brown vinegar is known to be one of the most important home remedies for treating chicken pox.

Baking Soda is a very popular home remedy used to control the itching resulting from chicken pox.

A bath of oatmeal is considered one of the best natural remedies for relieving the itching sensation caused by chicken pox.

What is Peritoneal Mesothelioma Cancer?

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a tumor of the membrane Peritoneum.

The peritoneum is a thin membrane in the organs in the abdomen consisting of mesothelial cells.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a disease that affects the lining of the abdomen or peritoneum.

It is caused by exposure to asbestos, which has been widely used in many industrial products, such as cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation.

The peritoneal form of mesothelioma is a relatively uncommon type of cancer that accounts for less than a quarter of all mesothelioma cases.

It is inconspicuous until decades after asbestos exposure.

Many cases are found through routine abdominal x-rays and CT scans showing something different than normal.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Symptoms:-

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, a change in your bowel habits, such as more frequent diarrhea or constipation, lumps of tissue in the abdomen and unexplained weight loss.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment:-

Peritoneal mesothelioma treatments are classified into localized treatments and systemic treatments. Systemic treatments are whole body treatments like chemotherapy. Localized treatments include surgery and radiotherapy.

Radiation therapy or radiotherapy uses high energy rays (like x-rays) to kill cancer cells in the affected area.

Chemotherapy for peritoneal mesothelioma controls symptoms and tries to slow the cancer down. This therapy is used to kill mesothelioma cells by injecting anti-cancer drugs that are usually injected into a vein.

New treatments include Photodynamic, gene, angiogenesis, and immunotherapy that could hold the key to turning the tide on this deadly, debilitating, and tragic disease.

Swine flu ‘hits airways harder’

Swine flu has killed at least 500 peop

BBC News

H1N1 swine flu attacks the respiratory system in a more sustained way than the standard seasonal virus, research in animals shows.

Tests showed swine flu multiplies in greater numbers across the respiratory system, and causes more damage.

And instead of staying in the head like seasonal flu, it penetrates deeper into the respiratory tissues – making it more likely to cause pneumonia.

The University of Wisconsin study appears in the journal Nature.

It also suggests that swine flu may mimic the flu virus which caused the great pandemic of 1918, in which millions died.

The 1918 virus also had a greater ability than standard flu to cause damage to the respiratory system.

The researchers carried out their work on ferrets, monkeys and mice.

They also analysed samples taken from people who survived the 1918 pandemic and found that they seem to have extra immune protection against the current virus – again suggesting similarities.

However, the Wisconsin team stressed that swine flu produced, in the vast majority of cases, only mild symptoms, and is still sensitive to anti-viral drugs.Read more…

Food Allergies and Breathing Problems

Although many people who do not have asthma consider it to be a problem with breathing, it actually goes much deeper than that. For people that suffer from asthma on a regular basis, the effects can not only be uncomfortable but they may actually be life-threatening. As a result of the bronchial walls closing, it becomes increasingly difficult for an individual that is undergoing an asthma attack to breathe properly. As a matter of fact, there are cases in which these walls close to the extent where the air is cut off completely and the individual loses consciousness or perhaps even dies.

Although there are some pharmaceutical treatments for asthma, these are merely only things that are going to control the symptoms to a certain extent, not things that are actually going to be able to cure the problem and control it for the long term. Most people realize that in order to do so, they are going to have to adjust their lifestyle considerably but for individuals that suffer from this problem on a regular basis, it is really going to be well worth the effort.Read more…
